DR Congo Gets Boost: UAE Installs $200M Clean Energy Plant
In a significant development, the UAE-based company SkyPower Global has secured a contract from the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) to establish a 200-megawatt clean energy plant in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). This milestone project, known as the DRC Green Giant, marks a crucial step towards bolstering DR Congo’s clean energy output and fostering sustainable economic growth in the region.

SkyPower Global, a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, is set to spearhead the DRC Green Giant project in collaboration with AFC. The initiative aims to install a 200MW clean energy plant in DR Congo, with the first phase of the project estimated to cost $200 million (Dh734 million). Kerry Adler, president and CEO of SkyPower, emphasizes the project’s significance in creating employment opportunities, with an estimated 6,000 job years to be generated across four phases.

Through a Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL), the state-owned utility of Congo, the project aims to contribute to the country’s energy diversification efforts. President Félix Tshisekedi’s vision for enhancing clean energy output aligns with the project’s objectives, with anticipated benefits including a boost to the African nation’s GDP and the creation of approximately 30,000 job years.
