Most visa guides compare the Green Visa and the Golden Visa as if you are free to pick either. You are not. Your income, your job category and your paperwork decide it for you. This guide starts from what you earn, then tells you which UAE residency you can realistically get, and the three traps that quietly cancel it.
- Employee earning AED 15,000 to 29,999 basic: Green Visa (5 years).
- Employee earning AED 30,000+ basic, or AED 2M in property: Golden Visa (10 years).
- Freelancer with AED 360,000 a year over 2 years: Green Visa.
- Partner or investor with AED 1M in a UAE business: Green Visa investor route.
The comparison table
| Visa | Duration | Income or investment test | Self-sponsored? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard employment visa | 2 years | No minimum, set by employer contract | No, tied to employer |
| Green Visa (skilled employee) | 5 years | AED 15,000+ basic salary, bachelor’s degree, MoHRE skill level 1 to 3 | Yes |
| Green Visa (freelancer) | 5 years | About AED 360,000 income over the past 2 years plus a freelance permit | Yes |
| Green Visa (investor or partner) | 5 years | About AED 1M in a qualifying UAE business | Yes |
| Golden Visa | 10 years (some routes 5) | AED 30,000+ salary, AED 2M property or investment, or approved talent categories | Yes |
Thresholds are the figures most published guides agree on and can be updated by the authorities, so confirm the current rule with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security before applying. Published government-fee estimates differ by source and emirate. One comparison puts the Green Visa at roughly AED 4,500 to 5,500 over five years against about AED 9,885 for a ten-year Golden Visa, so budget for typing, medical and Emirates ID costs on top.
Decide by income, not by name
| Your situation | Best route | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried, AED 18,000 basic | Green Visa | Allowances do not count, only basic pay |
| Salaried, AED 35,000 basic | Golden Visa | Skill-level and degree evidence |
| Freelancer, AED 500,000 a year | Green Visa | Two years of proof, not one good year |
| Founder, company worth AED 1.2M | Green Visa (investor) | Valuation and licence must be current |
| Property buyer, AED 2.5M | Golden Visa | Mortgage and title-deed conditions |
Three traps that cancel or block it
1. Basic salary, not package. The AED 15,000 line is measured on basic salary on your MoHRE-registered contract. A AED 15,000 “total package” built from housing and transport allowances usually fails.
2. Time abroad. A Green Visa is reported to lapse if you stay outside the UAE for six continuous months, while the Golden Visa carries no comparable limit. If you travel for long stretches, that difference alone can decide the choice.
3. Falling below the line later. Green Visa eligibility follows the same test on renewal. If your salary drops under AED 15,000, or a freelance year falls short, the visa can be at risk.

FAQ
Is the Green Visa cheaper than the Golden Visa? Generally yes, on both thresholds and published government fees, but check the current fee schedule.
Can I get a Green Visa without a UAE job? Yes, through the freelancer or investor routes, if you meet the income or investment test.
Do I need a company? Not for the employee or freelancer routes. The investor route needs a qualifying UAE business.
