A UAE residence visa does not make you a UAE tax resident on paper. For that you need a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) from the Federal Tax Authority, and the fee you pay can differ more than threefold depending on one small detail: whether you hold a corporate tax registration number. This guide covers who qualifies, what it costs in each case, and why having the certificate does not end your tax obligations back home.
- Individuals qualify with 183 days in the UAE in a 12-month period, or 90 days plus UAE ties.
- Fees: AED 50 submission plus AED 500, 1,000 or 1,750 depending on who you are.
- Hard copy adds AED 250 per certificate.
- Target processing is around 5 business days after a complete application, though some providers quote less.
Do you qualify?
| Route | Presence needed | Other conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 183-day test | 183 days or more in a 12-month period, not necessarily consecutive | None |
| 90-day test | 90 days or more in 12 months | UAE or GCC nationality or a valid UAE residence permit, plus a permanent home or employment or business in the UAE |
| Company | Real operations and management in the UAE | Licence, tax registration and financial records; some guidance says the company must be about 12 months old |
Evidence usually includes your passport, Emirates ID, an entry and exit report and proof of home, job or business. Companies are asked for the trade licence, corporate tax registration and bank statements. Check the exact list on the FTA service page before you apply.
What it costs: the same certificate, three prices
| Applicant | Submission | Issuance | Total (electronic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered with a corporate tax TRN | AED 50 | AED 500 | AED 550 |
| Individual without a TRN | AED 50 | AED 1,000 | AED 1,050 |
| Company without a TRN | AED 50 | AED 1,750 | AED 1,800 |
The trap: a company that has not registered for corporate tax pays more than three times the registered rate. Since registration is mandatory for most companies anyway, registering first can save you AED 1,250 on the certificate alone. If you also need printed copies for a foreign bank, each hard copy is AED 250, so ordering three adds AED 750.
DTA certificate vs a local-purpose certificate
You select the purpose when you apply. A certificate for a double taxation agreement is usually what foreign tax authorities, banks and treaty claims require. A certificate for local purposes is simpler, but it may not be accepted abroad. Many foreign bodies accept only the treaty-purpose version, so choose before you pay, not after.
What a TRC does not do
- It does not grant a visa. See our visa comparison guide.
- It does not by itself end tax residency in your home country. Your home rules still apply.
- It is not a substitute for registration. Corporate tax and VAT are separate, see VAT registration.
If you are a remote worker, our guide to the Dubai remote work visa explains why UAE residency and home-country tax status are separate questions.
Step by step

- Log in to EmaraTax and open the Tax Residency Certificate service.
- Choose the purpose and the relevant 12-month period.
- Upload documents, pay the fee and download the certificate when issued.
